Overview
Hammerfest is on the island of Kvaløya and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. In 2005, Hammerfest was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Meridian Pillar at Fuglenes, which marks the northernmost point of measurement on the Struve Meridian Arc.
The Protestant Church of Hammerfest was built by architect Hans Magnus, who among other things also designed the northernmost church in the world on Svalbard.
The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and North Troms. The first part of the main sequence of exhibits, on the ground floor, depicts the events themselves; the second consists largely of a series of reconstructions of the town during and following its reconstruction.
The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society significance of the polar bear is that this animal is the town's mascot and heraldic crest.
The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries.
