Overview

Delphi, ancient town and seat of the most important Greek temple and oracle of Apollo. It lay in the territory of Phocis on the steep lower slope of Mount Parnassus, about 6 miles (10 km) from the Gulf of Corinth. Delphi is now a major archaeological site with well-preserved ruins. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

Delphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world. According to ancient myth, Zeus released two eagles, one from the east, the other from the west, and caused them to fly toward the centre. They met at the future site of Delphi, and the spot was marked by a stone called the omphalos (navel), which was later housed in the Temple of Apollo. According to legend, the oracle at Delphi originally belonged to Gaea, the Earth goddess, and was guarded by her child Python, the serpent. Apollo is said to have slain Python and founded his own oracle there.

What To Expect

Delphi Ancient Town

Delphi (Greek: Δελφο)ί, in legend previously called Pytho (Πυθώ), was an ancient sacred precinct and the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi, marked by the stone monument known as the omphalos (navel).According to the Suda, Delphi took its name from the Delphyne, the she-serpent (drakaina) who lived there and was killed by the god Apollo (in other accounts the serpent was the male serpent (drakon) Python). The sacred precinct occupies a delineated region on the south-western slope of Mount Parnassus. It is now an extensive archaeological site, and since 1938 a part of Parnassos National Park. The precinct is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in having had a great influence in the ancient world,

Delphi

Delphi is a municipality of Greece as well as a modern town adjacent to the ancient precinct. The modern town was created after removing buildings from the sacred precinct so that the latter could be excavated. The two Delphis, old and new, are located on Greek National Road 48 between Amfissa in the west and Livadeia, capital of Voiotia, in the east. The road follows the northern slope of a pass between Mount Parnassus on the north and the mountains of the Desfina Peninsula on the south. The pass is of the river Pleistos, running from east to west, forming a natural boundary across the north of the Desfina Peninsula, and providing an easy route across it.

Kryas Livadeia Springs

The Springs of Krya are located on the southern outskirts of the city of Livadia. The river that flows in this particular place is one of the two in Greece with a female name. This is the river Erkyna, which took its name from the nymph of the same name, (the other river with a female name is Neda, located between Ilia and Messinia). The mountain above Livadia is Elikonas, while nearby is the famous Parnassos, which can be seen when approaching the city. A short distance from the springs of Krya, the oracle of Trophonius was located in antiquity, which also served as a precursor for the oracle of Delphi. Inside the river there is a bust of the nymph, a nice find for the visitor to understand the story. The area is quite exploited, while it is suitable for families with children. The trees provide rich shade, the municipality has installed several benches and the streets are largely paved. Several small bridges or structures connect the two banks of the river.
