Sighisoara Medieval Town – Besides being the birthplace of famous ruler Vlad the Impaler associated with the fictional character of Dracula, Sighisoara has the last still inhabited medieval citadel not only in Transylvania but in whole Europe and also a World Heritage Site since 1993.

Sighisoara Medieval Town was first mentioned in 1191 as a town, built on the site of a former Roman fort named Castrum Sex, Sighisoara is one of the seven fortified cities of Transylvania established in the 12th century by the German craftsmen and merchants known as Saxons who were invited here by the King of Hungary in order of strengthening the Eastern border of Hungarian Kingdom against the invaders.

Viscri Fortified Church

Viscri is only one of the Saxon villages of Transylvania. Of course, is a special one, due to his great fortified church which is part of UNESCO World Heritage.When the Saxons came here, at the end of 12th century, they have found a little chappel, which suffered transformations during the time. The actual church of Viscri is a romanesque chapel enlarged in the early 16th century to form a single-nave church, with a fortified storey resting on semicircular arches supported by massive buttresses; walls strengthened in the 17th century (UNESCO description). A very interesting museum is part of the citadel.

The origins of Sighisoara go back to the Roman times. During the First Century AD, the Dacians (ancient inhabitants of the territory of modern Romania which eventually will develop into the Romanian people), built a fortification called Sandava. Under the Roman administration it was known as Castrum Stenarum. During the 12th century, the Transylvanian Saxons built a new citadel which was named Schäßburg. Sighisoara (Schäßburg - Schassburg or Schäsbrich in German) still stands as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this perfectly intact 16th century gem with nine towers, cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches rivals the historic streets of Old Prague or Vienna for atmospheric magic.
