What To Expect
Enjoy a private, cozy and informative wine tasting session in Bucharest's first wine bar to be reopened after the 1989 revolution. Located inside a century old house, the bar has an elegant interior and the wine bottles displayed like books on shelves create a perfect ambiance.
You’ll taste 4 different varieties of local wines along with a plate of traditional cheese & charcuterie and discover the distinctive “terroir” of Dealu Mare, Romania's most famous wine region. Same as Bordeaux or Tuscany, Dealu Mare sits close to the 45th parallel, has a hot climate until late September and with mostly clay or limestone based soils, the region offers ideal conditions for red wines.
Your guide will offer insights into the various wine varieties but also tell you about the history of the local wine industry and the challenges it faced during the soviet occupation and communist years following WW2, when private property was confiscated, brands were destroyed and mass production policies ruined quality.
After the 1989 revolution that overthrew communism, Romania slowly started to rebuild its wine sector aiming to reclaim its spot in top 10 winemakers (currently 12th world producer).
