Overview

Let me take you on an unforgettable day trip to my native Danube Bend, one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, in my comfy and safe Mitsubishi Outlander 4WD. This tour is special, as after visiting the beautiful Mediterranean-style old town of Szentendre, the magnificient Castle of Visegrád, and the equally impressive Basilica of Esztergom, we'll return to Budapest on the other side of the Danube, something which very few tour guides do, despite the breathtaking views and the charming, historical villages awaiting you on that side too (from Esztergom, we'll cross over to Slovakia, take photos of the Esztergom Basilica with the river from the other side, and return to Budapest through Nagymaros/Verőce/Vác, where we will also stop for photos). After visiting the old town in Szentendre, we can visit the world famous local Marcipan Manufacture and Museum, and in Esztergom the unique medieval collection of the Christian Museum. I'll be flexible with timing/stops/eating as you wish.

Museum of Christian Art (Kereszteny Muzeum)

The Esztergom Christian Museum is a treasure trove of ecclesiastical art and history, boasting Hungary's most prestigious church collection (optional). As the nation’s third most significant painting collection—rivaling Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery—it offers an exquisite journey through centuries of European and Hungarian masterpieces. From the late medieval wonders like Thomas de Coloswar’s Calvary Altar and the Garamszentbenedek Lord's Coffin, through the Passion paintings of the most outstanding artist of late medieval Hungarian painting, known as “Master MS”, to the magnificent modern paintings, the museum’s diversity is unparalleled.

Veroce

As our last stop of the day, we will stop for coffee/ice cream in Verőce, a charming village located on the banks of the Danube River, where you can view an interesting riverside system of retaining walls, first started based on the plans of famous Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. It's a unique sight in the Hungarian part of the Danube, and again something very few tour operators do, despite its obvious charm.

Diadalív

Discover Hungary's only triumphal arch, the Vác Arch of Triumph, fondly called the "Stone Gate" by locals. This remarkable monument, built in 1764 to honor Empress Maria Theresa, was designed in elegant Copf style by Viennese architect Isidore Canevale. Commissioned by Bishop Antal Migazzi for the Empress's grand reception, the arch has a fascinating story: legend has it that, constructed in just two weeks, the Empress hesitated to drive her carriage beneath it. Upon her departure weeks later, reassured by its sturdy presence, she confidently passed through. Today, this beautifully restored free-standing arch, adorned with striking illumination, offers a majestic sight for visitors to admire.
