Peniche is also a small, fortified fishing town where the fishing industry is a very important activity. Peniche was an island until the 16th century, when mud created a narrow isthmus and is now very popular as a surfers paradise. You can admire the strange rock formations in Cabo Carvoeiro and, in good weather, you will see the fabulous Berlengas Island.
