The rugged hills surrounding the five villages are accessible thanks to numerous, sloping to the sea terracings. Monterosso, the largest one, is full of shops and restaurants and has a wide sandy beach; Vernazza has, instead, a natural port shaped as an amphitheater, surrounded by the typical colored houses. Corniglia, which is certainly the most authentic and most crowded of villages, lies 100 meters above sea level on a rocky upland. From Manarola you can reach Riomaggiore in less than 15 minutes thanks to the Lovers' Lane, a particularly intimate and romantic path dated back to the twenties.
