What To Expect

Route Details: Includes Clava Cairns, Culloden Battlefield, Clan Mackenzie and Clan Fraser Clan
Lands, Wardlaw Mausoleum, Beauly Priory, Robertsons the Larder Farm Shop and Highland Coos.

Clan Mackenzie & Fraser Clan Lands - Journey through a breath-taking landscape with opportunities
for exploration and discovery. As you traverse the stunning valley towards the village of Struy, we
cross the river to explore the magnificent Fraser Lovat lands. Prepare to be enchanted by the magic
of your very own Lallybroch.
Eskadale Church – spend 15-20 minutes here. The Lovat Private Chapel of St Mary's Eskadale
is a serene and secluded place, surrounded by stunning Highland scenery. This chapel holds great
significance for outlander fans due to the connection with the Lovat Fraser Clan. Many of the Lovat
Fraser Clan members are buried here.

From here we will continue our journey with a short drive to the Wardlaw Mausoleum. We spend 30 minutes here. The Wardlaw Mausoleum is
the 17th Century Mausoleum of the Lovat Frasers. Built in 1634 for the Lovat Frasers and remodelled
in 1722 by the old fox himself. It's inhabitants include Simon Lord Lovat the 'Old Fox' of the Jacobite
Rebellion (Grandfather of Outlander's Jamie Fraser).

Travel into the wonderful Beauly Priory in Beauly, spend 30 minutes here. This quaint town derives its name from
the phrase 'beau lieu', meaning beautiful place, as described by Mary Queen of Scots during her stay
in the village in 1564. The ruins of Beauly Priory, which once served as a 13th-century settlement for
Valliscaulian Monks, are a sight to behold. The monks originated from France, in the Burgundy
region - Val des Choux or "Valley of the cabbages" not far from Dijon. Only the prior was allowed to
have contact with the wider community. The graveyard is adorned with intriguing and some
indecipherable tombstones. Today, Beauly Priory is renowned for its appearance in Outlander, as it
is the final resting place of Clan Fraser members and was featured in season two when Claire meets
Maisri the Seer. Diana Gabaldon, author of the book series, has also held book signings and talks in
Beauly.
Continue a short distance to Robertson’s the Larder Beauly to see the two
resident Highland Cows and enjoy browsing in the on site local produce shop with products from all
over the local Highland region.
Lunch – Either stop in Beauly for Lunch (The Priory or Corner on the Square) or Simpsons Garden
Centre on the way to Clava Cairns. (Lunch not included in tour cost).
After lunch we take a short drive to Clava Cairns, which is a Bronze Age Burial Ground located near Inverness, and
has been remarkably well-preserved. Despite its historical significance, the site was often overlooked
in favour of its more well-known neighbour, Culloden Battlefield. However, in 2014, the TV
adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novel brought Clava Cairns to the forefront. The site
became an instant sensation, as it was suggested by Diana Gabaldon that the show's fictitious stone
circle, Craigh na Dun, was inspired by this ancient burial ground.
Next we will visit Culloden Battlefield for one hour. Featured as the battle on Drumossie moor in Outlander as well as
many other scenes.
Dragonfly in Amber - On the eve of the battle, Jamie sends Claire back through the stones on Craigh
na Dun, in order to save Claire's life as well as that of their unborn child. After seeing them safe, he
intends to try to save as many of his men as possible, and then die in the battle.
Voyager - Jamie awakens after the battle is over, dazed and wounded. He thinks he has died, but is
soon disabused of the notion when he finds Black Jack Randall's corpse lying on top of him. Jamie
recalls that his godfather Murtagh has died in the battle, but doesn't remember the details of his
death.
Ewan Cameron and Iain MacKinnon move Jamie from the battlefield into a farmhouse, where they
wait with a group of Jacobites for the English to make a move. On the second day, Major Lord
Melton comes to the farmhouse with an order to immediately execute the Jacobite traitors. Only
Jamie is saved, as Melton's younger brother Lord John Grey owes him a debt of honor. Melton sends
Jamie home on a wagon, expecting him to die on the journey.
The Fiery Cross - During an exchange with Archibald Hayes, Jamie has several details of the battle
recalled to him. Hayes describes Jamie saving his life, then returning to the battle.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes - Jamie dreams of his final confrontation with Randall at Culloden.
While working as an Indian Agent, Jamie tells a group of Cherokee about his feats in battle, and
remembers during the telling details long suppressed in his memory.
At the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, Jamie recalls the actions of his godfather, Murtagh, at
Culloden, and feels his presence with him during the current battle.

All below are time & Interest depending in Inverness city centre:
Leaky’s Bookshop - A destination that should not be missed when visiting Inverness. This second
hand bookshop offers a unique and enchanting experience, with visitors feeling as though they have
stepped back in time. The colourful books and the distinct aroma of old pages create a magical
atmosphere. Leaky’s is Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop today and the building itself has a
rich history, having once served as a Gaelic church and a war hospital for the Hanoverians wounded
in the Battle of Culloden.
Old High Church – This picturesque church which overlooks the River Ness, is the oldest in Inverness.
It is something of a paradox in that it has been a place of worship and of killing. After the Battle of
Culloden, the church was used as a prison for Jacobite rebels, and the church yard outside was used
to execute them. There are two stones which serve as a reminder of this; one which the Jacobite
soldier would sit on, and the other a few yards away where the executioner would rest his gun.
Abertaff House - Abertaff House is the oldest surviving building in Inverness, dating back to 1593. It
was built as a townhouse for Clan Fraser of Lovat, and was once occupied by Colonel Archibald
Fraser who was the son of the infamous ‘Old Fox’, Lord Lovat. The building was restored by the
National Trust for Scotland in 1966 and is now open to the public.
Flora MacDonald Statue – Flora MacDonald, from South Uist, is the best-known and most loyal
female Jacobite supporter, and is remembered as a romantic heroine of the 1745 rebellion. After the
Battle of Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie became a fugitive in the Outer Hebrides for four months;
he had a price tag of £30,000 on his head. Flora MacDonald famously disguised him as her female
maid ‘Betty Burke’, and travelled with him from Benbecula ‘over the sea to Skye’ where he fled on a
French ship in September 1746. Flora was imprisoned for her involvement in the Prince’s escape, but
was inexplicably released the following year. Her bonnie bronze statue sits outside Inverness Castle.
