Traditional Turkish Ebru Workshop in a Historic Dervish Lodge
Overview
This is more than an art class — it’s a cultural immersion in one of Istanbul’s few active Mevlevi lodges. Learn the traditional Turkish marbling art of Ebru in its authentic setting, guided by Esma Ağca and Özge Güner, graduates of the esteemed Sünbül Efendi Ebrîhanesi, a center of classical marbling education.
You’ll discover the history, tools, and techniques of Ebru, and create your own work using traditional methods passed down through generations. The historic Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi offers a rare opportunity to engage with Turkish-Islamic arts in a space where that tradition still lives.
This is the only workshop in Istanbul where you can experience Ebru inside an original Mevlevihane, setting it apart from standard studio-based classes.
Optional: After the session, you’re welcome to attend a Whirling Dervish (Sema) ceremony held in the same venue. Tickets can be purchased separately on site.

What To Expect
Step into the peaceful atmosphere of the Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, a centuries-old Sufi lodge in the heart of Istanbul. After a warm welcome with Turkish tea, you’ll be introduced to Ebru — the fascinating art of Turkish marbling.
Your instructors, Esma Ağca and Özge Güner from the İnsan ve İrfan Foundation, will guide you through the history, tools, and techniques of this Ottoman art. You’ll learn how to prepare the water-based marbling tray, mix pigments, and apply traditional patterns using special brushes.
No experience is needed — this is a hands-on workshop. You’ll practice the basics and create your own marbled paper to take home as a unique souvenir.
You’re welcome to take photos or videos, enjoy the calming process, and connect with Turkish culture in this historic setting.
Optional: Attend a Whirling Dervish Ceremony
After the workshop, you may choose to attend the Sema ceremony — the spiritual ritual of the Mevlevi order, held at the same venue. Tickets available separately on site.
