What To Expect
The Samouco saltpans are centuries old, and give us an insight into how sea salt was produced in the early days. Furthermore, they are an important place of feeding, refuge and nesting for thousands of birds, due to their proximity with the Tagus estuary.
Come with us and learn about the history of the Salinas, how salt is produced and enjoy the incredible birdwatching that the area has to offer. Depending on the season we may see species such as Little Tern, Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Flamingos, Black-winged Kite, Osprey, Spoonbills, among many others. You will be guided by one of our experienced local guides, who will share with you their knowledge of the area and the wildlife that depends on it.
After a couple of hours or more of birdwatching, we will enjoy a packed lunch prepared by a local company. It will consist of a traditional Portuguese dish with a twist - it will be seasoned with halophyte plants grown in the area (plants that tolerate high salinity soils).
At the end of the tour you will leave with the knowledge that these habitats are being preserved just as they were, and serving the local community through ecotourism and culinary delights.
