Stopping location: Batalha, Batalha, Leiria District, Portugal
Batalha is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria, in the province of Beira Litoral, in Central Portugal. On August 14, 1385, the Portuguese king D. João I defeated the Castilian troops in Aljubarrota, thus freeing Portugal from the expansionist will of the opposing king, João I of Castile. Celebrating the victory of the battle, in the form of an ex-voto, the Master of Aviz ordered the construction, 4 km from that area, of the building that would become the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória. The construction of the Monastery made the town a hub for architectural studies from 1540 onwards and even a real school of architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. The small city of Batalhão was structured around the monument, along Rua Direita and a rosso, where, for example, the pillory was located. The spacious atrium next to the Monastery complex comes, sadly, from the vast demolition of 18th and 19th century houses in the 1940s.
