Inaugurated on July 31, 1876, on the initiative of the then Mayor of Setúbal António Rodrigues Manito, the market was undergoing successive renovations and enlargements, with the current building dating from 1930. The 5700 tiles that decorate the walls of the Market date from the 1930 expansion, making an allusion to the agricultural and fishing activities of the city, by José António Jorge Pinto and Pedro Pinto. Sancho I that the construction of a Romanesque-Gothic church of Santa Maria do Castelo began, worthy of the county that was created.In the year 1165 was created the Parish of Our Lady of the Castle of Sesimbra.The current church is from the early 18th century, 1721 as it suffered significant damage over the centuries.In the 20th century, from 1955 the church loses faithful because, in the place of Corredoura, a new church is born, much closer to the population. Thus the Church of the Castle begins to degrade and becomes in ruin by falling the ceiling.
