Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, 2 miles west of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury. It is a ring of standing stones, with each stone about 13 feet high, made from roughly 50,000 bluestones.The ring is arranged in a circle with an diameter of about 1,000 feet. There are no remains of any buildings associated with the monument itself but there are indications that some form of timber or wattle and daub structures may have stood nearby. In the 20th century, during a phase of land clearance in the area, most of these traces were destroyed or obscured. It is possible that finds from this site are amongst those held by the University of Leicester's archaeology department at its site on Camp Hill.The remains lie within a modern field boundary which includes the course and extent of the ridge and furrow system.

Explore the vast Avebury Stone Circle, one of the largest and oldest megalithic monuments in Europe. Discover the fascinating folklore and archaeological theories associated with this ancient site. Salisbury Cathedral was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church which was also dedicated to St. Thomas Becket, who had been martyred at nearby Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. It was originally consecrated by Archbishop Lanfranc in 1084, with construction lasting until about the middle of the century. The church was severely damaged by fire in 1499, and restored in 1523-4.The original dedication of the church is unknown, but it was most likely to St Thomas Becket or to King Edward IV. It then became dedicated to both saints.
