Following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. the ancient city of Pompeii was buried under ash and pumice.  Excavated many centuries later the ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer a fascinating, unparalleled insight into how people lived in Roman times.
