Provesende is situated close to the river Douro, between Pinhão and Sabrosa It is a really charming Douro village perched high on the hills above the Douro river with spectacular views down the Pinhão valley. Provesende has a beautiful church in the central square, an ancient pillory and fountain and a wonderfully old-fashioned bakery which the owner is delighted to show you round. There are also a couple of cafés and a restaurant with very good local food. Provesende is our spot for Lunch.

The Alto (upper) Douro, also known as the Douro Vinhateiro is dominated by big placards on the hillsides bearing the names of famous Port producers such as Cockburns, Taylors and Sandeman. The spectacular landscape is characterised by improbably steep terraces covered in vines and dotted with wine-producing farms called quintas.
