Abbazia Di Montecassino

The Montecassino abbey is a Benedictine monastery located on the top of Montecassino, in Lazio. It is the oldest monastery in Italy together with the monastery of Santa Scolastica. Founded in 529 by San Benedetto da Norcia on the site of an ancient tower and a temple dedicated to Apollo, it has undergone over the course of its history an alternate story of destruction, looting, earthquakes and subsequent reconstructions. The majestic abbey church, completely destroyed during the Second World War, was later completely rebuilt and consecrated by Pope Paul VI in 1964. It has 3 Cloisters Entrance cloister or Southern: area where the temple consecrated to Apollo stood. Cloister of Bramante also known as Sant'Anna: in the middle position of Renaissance style built in 1595. Cloister of the Benefactors or Northern: built in 1513 probably from a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger characterized by two theories of statues depicting popes and sovereigns.

Anfiteatro Romano di Casinum

The Archaeological Area of Cassino, which rises along the road that connects the urban center to the Abbey of Montecassino, with the adjoining Museum represents the most evident trace of the ancient Roman Casinum. In addition to the remains of the polygonal walls, you can admire the Theater, the Mausoleum of Ummidia Quadratilla and the Amphitheater, which is the most important monument in this archaeological area, of the ancient city.The Roman Amphitheater of Cassino was built in the 1st century AD. by the will of Ummidia Quadratilla, as recalled by a plaque found in 1757 which shows that the same matron also had a temple built at her own expense, of which no trace remains. The Amphitheater was used for gladiator games. The architecture of the Amphitheater and the presence of large water sources in the territory of Cassino suggest that it was also used for naval battles, through a system that allowed part of the structure to be filled with water

To Arpino and Sora

Arpino

Discover Arpino, Cicerone's hometown. It is one of the oldest and most important cultural and artistic centers in the province. The Roman lawyer, politician and philosopher Marco Tullio Cicero was born here in 106 BC; he is a true glory of Arpino, and his city was often mentioned in his works with pride and even with nostalgia; in modern times its name has been given to the main street of the city, to the historic Tulliano National Boarding School, to the Liceo Ginnasio Tulliano, to the medieval tower of the Acropolis of Arpino and to various other institutions, clubs, schools, even people; in the same Acropolis it is said that there was a house of his, presumably in the current via Cicera, adjacent to the so-called Muro Cicero, probably belonging to the noble and extinct Arpinian family of the De Bellis until the eighteenth century.

L'Acropoli di Civitavecchia

The Acropolis of Arpino is an archaeological site near the town of Arpino, one of the most important for the knowledge of the megalithic architecture of southern Lazio, not only for the great extension of the walls but also for their age, greater than that of other sites (according to some in the middle of the Iron Age, VIII / VII century BC), and classified according to the scale devised by Giuseppe Lugli in the second way.The civitas vetus of the city represents one of the best preserved walls built in polygonal work in pre-Roman times. Of particular significance is the presence of a "pointed arch", the only surviving one of its kind in the whole Mediterranean area.This is a typical cantilever arch, which forms a so-called scea door. The Acropolis is defended on the north side by massive polygonal walls of the second way, which even reach a height of six meters in some points, and are articulated with the pointed arch in a pre-Roman defense system.

Sora

Discover the hometown of Vittorio De Sica, iconic Italian actor who often acted with Sophia Loren. Visit is house and lear more about the ancient Sora'history: An ancient Volscian city, later occupied by the Samnites, it became a colony and a Roman municipality, then a Byzantine, Longobardi, Norman and Angevin possession. The first settlements date back to the Middle Paleolithic. One of a certain size was located on Mount San Casto and Cassio where sections of polygonal walls dating back to the Volscian period (VI-IV century BC) were also found. Sora was then the seat of a county (the County of Sora) and later, from 1443, of the Duchy of Sora, a sort of buffer state between the Papal State and the Kingdom of Naples. Finally, in 1796, King Ferdinand IV of Naples (who then assumed in 1816, after the Congress of Vienna, the title of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies) suppressed the Duchy of Sora, providing for the payment of the relative purchase price to Duke Antonio II Boncompagni.

Isola del Liri

The historic center is spread over an island formed by the Liri river which, at the height of the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi castle, is divided into two arms that each form a jump of about thirty meters: the Cascata Grande and the Cascata del Valcatoio. The origin of Isola del Liri is linked to the two Roman municipalities of Arpinum and Sora which divided the current municipal territory of the city. The conquests of the ancient Romans, who even arrived in Sannio, stabilized their presence for a long time in the lands of the current province of Frosinone. The city in the Middle Ages fell under the Byzantine and Lombard dominion, until it became part of the county of Sora in the Principality of Capua. Isola del Liri was the fief of the Isola family (de Insulae) from the 12th to the 14th century. Among the famous personalities of this family, were Roffredo dell'Isola, abbot of Montecassino, count of Arce, and Bartolomeo dell'Isola who enjoyed the honors in the seat of Capuano in Naples.

From Arpino to Rome (or Naples)

Certosa di Trisulti

Optional if you come back to Rome. The Charterhouse of Trisulti is a monastery located in the municipality of Collepardo, in the province of Frosinone, located among oak woods, in the so-called Selva d'Ecio, at the foot of Mount Rotonaria (Monti Ernici). It was recognized as a national monument with a ministerial decree of 17 July 1879. A first Benedictine abbey was founded in 996 by San Domenico di Sora: some ruins remain a short distance from the present complex. The current abbey was built in 1204 near the previous one, at the behest of Pope Innocent III of the Counts of Segni and was assigned to the Carthusians. The name Trisulti derives from the Latin tres saltibus which is the name by which it was called a 12th century castle managed by the Colonna and which dominated the three passes that led respectively towards Abruzzo, Rome and towards the southern area of the Papal States. .

Anagni

Optional if you come back to Rome. It is known as the city of the Popes, for being the birthplace of four popes (Innocent III, Alexander IV, Gregory IX and Boniface VIII) and for having been the papal residence and seat for a long time. The legend counts it among the "saturnian cities", the five Lazio cities founded by the god Saturn (Anagni, Alatri, Arpino, Atina and Ferentino, the latter also known as Antino). You will admire Santa Maria's Cathedral, Badia di Santa Maria della Gloria, Palazzo della Ragione, Casa Barnekow and the entrance doors to the historic center: Porta Cerere, Porta Santa Maria, Porta San Francesco, Porta Tufoli and Porta San Nicola. One of the traditions behind Anagni are the medieval parades that take place in the summer period in the months of July and August. The Contrade have precisely the role of recalling the "History of the Slap": It was an episode that occurred to Pope Boniface VIII.

Reggia di Caserta

Optional if you come back to Naples. The Royal Palace of Caserta is a royal palace, with an adjoining park, located in Caserta. It is the largest royal residence in the world by volume and the historical owners were the Bourbons of Naples, as well as a short period in which it was inhabited by the Murat. In 1997 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Palace was wanted by the King of Naples Carlo di Borbone, who, taken from a "competition" with the French royals and eager to donate structures to Naples that could play a role of capital city of European level, decided to inaugurate a palace that could rival in magnificence and grandeur with that of Versailles. The palace, defined as the last great realization of the Italian Baroque, was finished in 1845, resulting in a grandiose complex of 1200 rooms and 1742 windows and the park of the palace extends for 3 kilometers in length, with a south-north development, over 120 hectares of surface.
