Its enduring legacy extends through more than two thousand years of history, from its original conception in the Roman Empire to its role in the Christianization of Rome, and on to its modern identity as a national and architectural icon.The first version of the Pantheon was constructed by Marcus Agrippa, the right-hand man of Emperor Augustus and a powerful general. Built around 27 BCE, Agrippa’s Pantheon was part of a broader plan to transform the Campus Martius area of Rome. This version of the Pantheon was a standard rectangular Roman temple structure, likely dedicated to all gods (hence the name "Pantheon") and intended to glorify both Augustus and the Roman gods who were believed to protect the empire.

Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

The Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, located in Piazza della Minerva, has its origins rooted in ancient Rome. The site was originally home to a temple, possibly dedicated to the Roman goddess Minerva, who was associated with wisdom, arts, and warfare. While no clear evidence has pinpointed the exact nature of this temple, it is believed that it may have been part of the larger Campus Martius complex, an important public space in ancient Rome. Over time, this temple likely fell into disuse as Rome transitioned from paganism to Christianity in the early centuries of the Common Era. As Christianity grew, old pagan temples were often repurposed as churches, and Santa Maria sopra Minerva was no exception. The name “sopra Minerva,” meaning "above Minerva," directly references the church’s location over the ruins of the Roman temple.
