    Caldeira das Furnas

The Furnas Volcano is a large volcanic building, formed by numerous eruptions, intercalated with periods of calm, over the past 800,000 years. It has a large depression at the top, called a boiler, with 8 km per 5.6 km and encompasses an important geodiversity, highlighting the Lagoa das Furnas, several small volcanoes, fumarolic fields and a wide variety of sources of mineral and thermal waters: the “hydropole” of the Furnas. At the initiative of the Micaelense Agricultural Promotion Society and its founding partner José do Canto, tobacco, pineapple, sweet potato for alcohol production, beet for sugar and tea production began to be produced. The first tea seeds came from Brazil in the early 19th century.
