Here was the old town hall, which was later demolished during the construction of the church of Santo Antão. In the 16th century the square was named after the Portuguese explorer Giraldo Sem Pavor. The square is home to the impressive 16th-century Palácio de Dom Manuel, a beautiful example of the transition between Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
