La città di Scicli sorge all'incrocio di tre valloni, con case da ogni parte su per i dirupi, una grande piazza in basso a cavallo di una fiumara, e antichi fabbricati ecclesiastici che coronano in più punti, come acropoli barocche, il semicerchio delle altitudini...» Scicli dista 24 chilometri da Ragusa. Il suo territorio comunale si estende dal mare alle propaggini meridionali del tavolato ibleo. I paesaggi sono molto vari: si passa dalla costa (alternando quella bassa e sabbiosa a modeste falesie calcaree) coperta dalla macchia mediterranea ai pendii dolci di origine alluvionale dell'entroterra con ulivi, mandorli e carrubi fino a giungere ai rilievi calcarei della parte settentrionale e interna in cui sorge il capoluogo. Il territorio comunale è solcato da diversi corsi d'acqua i quali hanno tutti carattere torrentizio e pressoché stagionale fatta eccezione per l'Irminio; gli altri principali torrenti intercettano il centro di Scicli e sono il Mothucanus o torrente Modica-Scicli.

Dopo il terremoto del 1693, la città di Ragusa antica fu ricostruita attuando cantieri che produssero opere, edifici e monumenti di gusto tardo barocco. In essa risultano presenti ben 14 dei 18 monumenti della città di Ragusa oggi iscritti nel patrimonio dell'umanità.L'antica città contiene oltre cinquanta chiese e numerosi palazzi in stile barocco. Nella parte più orientale, si trova il Giardino Ibleo e sono inoltre presenti gli scavi di un'antica città che secondo diversi storici sarebbe identificabile con l'Hybla Heraia.Nel 1866 il quartiere si staccò amministrativamente dal resto della città diventando comune autonomo col nome di Ragusa Inferiore, nome che mantenne fino al 1922 quando fu cambiato in Ragusa Ibla[2].
