The Linth River flows into it and emerges as the Limmat. The greater portion of the lake is in the canton of Zürich, but 8 square miles are in Schwyz and 4 square miles in Sankt Gallen. The banks rise in gentle slopes, covered with vineyards and orchards, to hills with views of the Alps to the south.
